Project Background

Founded in 1986, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is a member hospital of Northwell Health. It serves as a major tertiary referral center in Staten Island, New York City.

SIUH occupies two expansive campuses along with several community-based health centers and laboratories, providing a combined capacity of 668 beds.

The hospital’s 17-acre north campus houses Staten Island’s most modern emergency department, a state-of-the-art education center, and its renowned Heart Institute. On the other hand, the south campus features its own emergency department and offers a range of specialty programs, including geriatric psychiatry, behavioral health care, and substance abuse services.

Project Description

Our absorption chiller will be installed to replace an aging YORK chiller, providing energy-efficient cooling to meet the hospital’s carbon reduction requirements.

Project Value

By utilizing steam generated by the boiler rather than relying on gas, electricity, or other conventional energy sources, this chiller system demonstrates an impressive level of efficiency, significantly decreasing energy consumption when compared to traditional chiller units.

This shift in energy sources not only improves efficiency but also leads to reduced operational costs due to lowered energy procurement expenses. The chiller’s reliance on controlled combustion processes inherent in steam generation contributes to a notable reduction in Co2 emissions, reinforcing its eco-friendliness.

Furthermore, the integration of steam from an existing boiler underscores the adaptability and practicality of the system, capitalizing on existing infrastructure to enhance energy self-sufficiency and operational stability.

Overall, this steam-powered chiller exemplifies the potential of innovative energy solutions to bring about efficiency, cost savings, and environmental benefits to industrial processes.

Project Highlight

Because of the positive reputation, and the high efficiency of the BROAD chiller, BROAD is the basis of the design.

Additionally, given the restricted size of the rigging opening, BROAD provided a customized design and transportation plan to alleviate the challenges and rigging costs. This approach was acknowledged and appreciated by the mechanical contractor.
