World’s First Zero-Concrete Tall Building Launched in the UAE, with Energy Efficient Design that Combats Climate Change
December 11th, 2023 Mohamed Ali Alabbar, founder of Emaar Properties, and Zhang Yue, chairman of BROAD Group, have jointly attended the signing ceremony of a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement between Eagle Hills, the Abu Dhabi based private real estate investment and development company founded by Mr. Alabbar, and BROAD Holon Company. Others present at the ceremony were H.E. Zhang Yiming, Chinese Ambassador to the UAE; Pan Xinyuan, president of the Bank of China (Dubai) Branch; Zhou Zhuojun, vice president of BROAD Group; as well as representatives from China’s Yabuli Entrepreneurs Forum including Ding Liguo, Zeng Qiang, among other delegates.
Prior to the signing ceremony, the parties had already entered into agreement to collaborate on the world’s first zero-concrete, factory-made high-rise pilot building project. The first batch of building modules will be manufactured in China and transported to the UAE for installation. Subsequently, a Holon manufacturing facility with production capacity of tens of thousands square meters of Holon modules will be established in the UAE, servicing the entire Middle East. This ambitious move aims to revolutionize the construction industry in the Middle East by promoting de-cementation and low-carbon technologies and materials.

June 1: BROAD U.S.A. held a festive gala at China Institute in downtown Manhattan to celebrate the founding of BROAD Group 35 years ago on World Environment Day, June 5, 1988. A highlight of the evening was a signing ceremony for the first Holon Building in North America, near Akron, Ohio. Holon Building is the BROAD Group’s mid to high-rise modular multifamily building made from stainless steel without the use of concrete, and designed to Passive House standards for high energy efficiency. The materials and technologies used in the Holon Building enable a reduction in energy consumption of up to 80% compared to a conventional building of the same area.
“The solution to the critical housing shortage in the US is to build modular, which delivers a project cycle up to 50% faster than site-built construction. 100% factory built housing ensures a predictable delivery time coupled with the highest quality from our highly automated robotic production line. But in addition to modular, we need to build high to maximize the use of land, particularly in the urban environment where land is at a premium. This is the promise of Holon Building: fast, affordable construction for both market rate and affordable housing” said Sunny Wang, President of BROAD U.S.A.
During the celebration, Jasper Diaz from the Office of New York City Mayor Eric Adams presented a City of New York Certificate of Recognition to BROAD U.S.A. “for its commitment to offering environmentally-friendly services and energy solutions that have helped industries across every sector to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions.” The Certificate further recognized BROAD U.S.A.’s work with the New York City Accelerator, established under the auspices of the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, and is charged with helping building owners to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in order to comply with Climate Mobilization Act goals to make NYC a greener, healthier city.
Additional highlights of the evening included a Customer Awards ceremony where BROAD recognized several prestigious applications for its high-efficiency central HVAC system that is powered by any thermal source and uses a water based refrigerant that provides environmentally friendly cooling, and docent led tours of the “Flowers on a River” exhibition of over 100 master works covering 500 years of Chinese dynastic history. “We look forward to the next 35 years of innovating solutions that save energy and reduce our customers’ carbon footprint,” remarked Dezhi Yang, General Manager of BROAD U.S.A.

The Holon Building was developed to overcome several specific challenges and problems:
● Long and unpredictable project cycles: The Holon Building is a 100% factory fabricated volumetric modular building produced to industrialized scale on a highly automated production line with a capacity of over 2 Million sf/year, ensuring precision quality and predictable delivery time.
● Long duration of site-built construction: To overcome frequent project delays and disruption to the urban environment, the Holon Building erection rate was designed to be up to three stories per day. Once delivered and craned into position, the modules need only be bolted. No welding is needed.
● Limited lifespan of reinforced conventional buildings: the average service life of a concrete building is < 75 years. The Holon Building uses stainless steel for key building components, which has a lifespan up to 20 times greater than a conventional building according to a Lifecycle Assessment performed on Holon Building.
● High energy consumption of conventional buildings: The Holon Building uses Passive House design principles and the “Nearly Zero Energy” Building standard for a 90% higher energy efficiency. Holon energy efficiency measures include superior rock wool insulation, multi-paned glass windows, exterior sunshades and interior thermal shades, and fresh air heat recovery where 100% outdoor air is brought into the indoor spaces with no recycled or return air, creating a healthier environment and reducing energy consumption.
The BROAD Holon Building is the first fully “5 C” Building: Quality Controllable, Construction time Controllable, Cost Controllable, CO₂ Controllable, and Global transport Controllable.
BROAD HOLON Home Garden Wins First Prize in the Modular Building Institute’s “Awards of Distinction”
April 28: BROAD Group won First Prize in the Modular Building Institute’s annual “Awards of Distinction “in the Multifamily 25,000+ sq. ft. category. The Awards of Distinction were awarded at the Modular Building Institute’s “World of Modular” annual convention and tradeshow in San Antonio. There were 141 entries for the various categories in the Awards of Distinction, which is one of the highest honors awarded in the modular construction industry.
The Awards of Distinction winners were chosen by a panel of judges and voting by attendees at the World of Modular expo on the basis of architectural excellence, technological innovation, sustainability, and time to completion. The BROAD project that won the award is the BROAD Holon Home Garden A1, an 11 story multifamily building built with stainless steel, including all load bearing members of the building.
The Holon Home Garden is a 100% factory made Near zero energy consumption building, incorporating B-CORE slab, BROAD’s innovating sandwich structure stainless steel material. The onsite construction time was just 29 hours. “We are honored to receive this prestigious award, and the recognition of our B-CORE stainless steel technology and Holon Building. The modular construction industry has a critical role to play in helping to alleviate the acute housing shortage, and we look forward to working with our developer partners in delivering quality, energy efficient buildings across the country”, remarked Sunny Wang, General Manager of BROAD U.S.A.
